One of the shows that greatly helped turn me to into a Dead Head. Simply stunning playing, accompanied by some of that raw, youthful energy, which didn't last many years unfortunately.

This source has some nice bonus material as well:

And check out the the 2 days prior (8/21 & 8/22) for some more stunning '68 GD.

i love an Alligator & Caution in the same show, especially with an Other One, a Dark Star perhaps, throw in a Death Don't and we have a recipe for bliss; and you're correct of course, this is Peak GD, thanks for linking it

and curiously enough ... if you juxtapose the '6' & '8' in 1968, you get 1986, the Peak year for the Mets ... ain't that Amazin'??

The METS probably did more drugs than the GD that year!

Haha, absolutely.

Speaking of baseball and drugs, ESPN just put together this nifty page about Dock Ellis:

And a new Dock Ellis documentary is coming out in 2013:

And another excuse to link this great clip, originally seen here courtesy of Cliff:

Hah, quite amazin'. And quite a downhill slide for the Mets lately, not that I can say I'm surprised. The first several months were fun while they lasted. Though I wont be totally happy with the team until the Wilpons are out of the picture.

What about April? The Avalon and Ark runs were outstanding. Lots of excellent playing in April. May and June are no slouches either.

shit, then I might as well say June, for 06-05...

there's a natural break after the Fillmore West shows...Avalon and Avalon are great though...love 04-06 and 04-22 especially...

Some will say that the playing got looser after they finished the recordings for Live Dead and therefore March makes more sense as a natural break. For me that looser playing sounds sloppy at times and that sloppiness starts in April and carries through the summer of '69. Lots of great shows but i think i prefer '68 to 3/69.
